High school graduates can usually give a sigh of relief following their cap and gown ceremony. After high school graduation, many teenagers can choose their own future. In today’s age, a firm academic track has already been established for most young scholars, and many high school graduates go to college or university. According to 2008 government statistics, 68.6% of high school graduates went to college the following Fall, one of the highest percentages in U.S. history. Of the high school graduates not enrolled in college, most of them entered the work force. In the United States, most high school graduates, on average, are eighteen years old. Some states require teenagers to attend high school until they are 18, while other states only require school until the age of 16. The laws vary. Most high school graduation ceremonies take place in late May or June. High school graduates can choose to attend college locally or attend college in a different city, state, or even country. Often times this is the first long-term experience away from home. Most high school graduates keep in touch with the convenience of the internet and, of course, telephone. Prior to their first year of college, most high school graduates take advantage of the summer as one of their last opportunities to socialize with their high school friends. |
